Camp China Itinerary

Day 1: Saturday

Upon your arrival at Chengdu Airport, you’ll be picked up and transferred to your accommodation in Chengdu.

Day 2: Sunday

After a much-needed rest after your long-flight, you’ll be whisked to a group meeting with fellow participants on the programme, during which time you’ll complete the registration process and receive a comprehensive explanation of programmes.

Following your group meeting, you’ll be given a crash-course language lesson, whereby you’ll be introduced to basic, yet useful Chinese phrases, that’ll make your time in the country much easier; elements of Chinese culture will differ to what you’ll be used to, therefore, tips on Chinese etiquette will be provided.

An ice-breaking game will give you the opportunity to relax in front of the rest of the group and begin making new friends before you explore the city at your own leisure and begin mapping your adventure!

Day 3: Monday

Now your adventure really begins with a trip to Chengdu Panda Base, a non-for-profit research and breeding facility in the hub of the city.

Following your visit to the Panda Base, absorb the atmosphere of sprawling Tianfu Square, a social space swallowed by surrounding skyscrapers, before heading for a spot of delicious, Chinese tea in People’s Park, the first public park within the city.

A trip to Kuan Zhai Alley, a cultural site comprising 45 Qing Ming dynasty style courtyards, modern villas and gardens, as well as theme hostels rounds off the day’s itinerary. The stunning trio of three alleys, (Kuan Alley, Zhai Alley and Jing Alley) allows visitors to interchange between China’s leisurely sites, as well as archaic and contemporary backdrops.

After building up an appetite, we’ll head back and enjoy delicious hot pot with the group to cap off an amazing day!

Day 4: Tuesday

Rise in unison with the early-morning sun as it begins its daily ascent and catch a transfer to Bifengxia Panda Reserve by bus at 8:30am.

Upon your arrival in the afternoon, visit the Panda Reserve office, where you’ll be registered as a Volunteer at the reserve; get kitted out in your working uniform and receive your staff card before taking a tour of the Panda Conservation Base.

After your tour, sit tight and watch a preparatory DVD to gain a basic knowledge of pandas, before meeting a Panda Keeper, who will be your Trainer during your time at the Reserve.

Day 5: Wednesday

You’ve completed your all-important training – it’s time to put the theory into practice and begin working with the Panda Keepers, during which time you’ll prepare panda food, feed the animals and clean their cages during what will be a truly memorable experience.

Following your day at the reserve, enjoy some social time with your fellow participants and prepare for a visit to Panda Bar.

Day 6: Thursday

Catch the bus back to Chengdu and prepare for a visit to Chunxi Road, a shopping district inundated with the luminous glare of commercialism.

Whether you’re keen to sample delicious Chinese delicacies, including Hong Dumplings, Lai Tangyuan (sweet rice balls with an assortment of fillings) Han Baozi (steamed buns with stuffing), or hunt for a bargain in one of the many stores, Chunxi Road is a bustling epicenter of consumerism in Chengdu and simply cannot be missed.

After navigating the rainbow infused rows of Chunxi Road, we’ll head Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chendou, a unique development combining conventional Chinese architecture with facets of contemporary culture.

Following your bout of retail therapy, the option is available to experience a Sichuan Opera show, a traditional form of Chinese entertainment.

Day 7: Friday

Come morning, we’ll catch a bus to see Leshan Giant Buddha; the monumental structure depicts Maitreya, a figure regarded as the future of the Buddhist world in Buddhist eschatology.

Upon our return from Leshan, we’ll visit Bar Street and sample some of the liveliest bars that Chengdu has to offer!

Day 8: Saturday

Recover from the previous evening at your own leisure, with a period of free time; we’ll be on hand to recommend places of interest, including a range of local Chinese massage spots and Music Park, a cluster of old-factories restored as a series of unique cafes, shops and a restaurant.

With plenty to see in this culturally diverse province, you’re guaranteed to occupy your time in a way that will tick your proverbial boxes!

Day 9: Sunday

Hop on the train to Gongcheng, Guilin an area renowned for its breathtaking landscape and rolling throngs of limestone hills.

Following your arrival, we’ll board the bus to Fengyan Village.

Following a visit to Fengyan, we’ll head to Lianhua town, during which time you can practice your newfound language skills whilst purchasing necessities during a trip to the local market and post office.

After sampling the local culture, you’ll be given time to prepare for the welcoming party in the Greenway Chinese Center.

Day 11: Tuesday

Today, we’ll begin the day with a visit to the village school and observe lessons from Chinese English teachers.

After watching the lessons, either put your own teaching into practice by helping local school children in the classroom, or volunteer with community work in the local village.

In the evening, we’ll learn how to play Mahjong, a traditional Chinese game deriving from the Qing dynasty and played by generations of Chinese families ever since.

Day 12: Wednesday

Journey to the county of Gongcheng: See the Confucius temple, the largest temple in Guangxi, a structure built to commemorate ideologist and educator Confucius.

Gaze at the wondrous Guangdong Temple and experience the antique beauty of Zhouwei Temple before exploring the antiquated Gongcheng streets.

Following your day of exploration, we’ll visit Marshall School and learn Tai Chi from the master.

Day 13: Thursday

Pop on a cycle helmet and begin a journey to the Banyan scenery spot. Enjoy lunch in the midst of exquisite surroundings, before scaling Moon Hill, a product of nature as featured on the cover of renowned international travel publication, Lonely Planet.

As the moon casts its silvery shimmer across the stunning backdrop, enjoy a romantic evening at West Street.

Day 14: Friday

Today we’ll visit Xingping ancient town; the image adorned on the 20-Yuan note and a beautiful painting decorating a wall in China’s embassy to the UN headquarters are both linked by the ancient Chinese town of Xingping, a scenic civic hugging the banks of the Li River famous for its cultural heritage and panoramic views.

With a repertoire of original features littered in amongst the town, including original residences, pavilions and temples, Xingping allows visitors the opportunity to delve into the China of yesteryear, void of contemporary influences.

After ascending the mountainous terrain and taking in the astounding views, we’ll begin our journey back to Gongcheng.

Prior to departure, there is an optional opportunity to take a boat trip to see the sights of Li River.

Day 15-16: Saturday/Sunday

Enjoy free time to spend as you choose. The Longsheng Rice Terraces are a sight to behold; the intricate patterns tattooed across miles of lush landscape are exquisite and come highly recommended!

Day 17: Monday

Travel back to Gongcheng, before joining the group for dinner.
