Camp South Africa is a volunteer programme offering the incredible opportunity to really make a difference in disadvantaged communities through coaching sports or teaching a range of different subjects to children in schools in South Africa.
Port Elizabeth is home to some of the best beaches in South Africa and is the third largest port in the country. It is also home to the BIG 7, including giraffes, African elephants and southern right whales.
Based along the Eastern Cape of the country, just East of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth is a must see when in South Africa.
Volunteering in schools either coaching sports or teaching a range of different subjects.
As sports in not on the curriculum in schools in South Africa, Camp South Africa specialises in sending enthusiastic individuals into schools to help coach sports; these include football, tennis, netball, field hockey, swimming and more. Moreover, we are always needing more teachers in the classroom to help improve subjects such as English, Maths, Geography, Drama.
As part of Camp South Africa, applicants also become sports scouts, recognising talented students at the end of their time at Camp and nominating them to go on to further education in the form of a school of excellence, which is run solely by the supported charity and can lead to scholarship; there is no greater feeling in the world at Camp South Africa than an applicant seeing one of the children they have been coaching get selected for a scholarship at a high level secondary school.
The majority of children in South Africa don’t get to attend secondary school due to lack of funding. With your skills, you can help teach them and be the difference between them having an extended education and a brighter future.
Monday - Friday will be spent in schools volunteering; these sessions will take place during school hours, from 8:00 - 9:00am until around 4:00pm. Applicants will visit a number of different schools each day, carrying out multiple sessions to children of various ages.
Free time will then be had in the evenings and during the weekends. Evenings are usually spent enjoying a BBQ (traditional Braii), playing football, swimming in the pool, ping pong competitions and more. This is the perfect way to get to know the other volunteers and settle in to your home whilst in South Africa.
Weekends are the perfect time to experience all that the local area has to offer, with many choosing to go on safari, try shark cage diving, sky diving and more. Port Elizabeth is known worldwide for its breathtaking beaches, meaning surfing and water activities are some of the most popular ways to pass time.
